Hamato Yoshi is a human ninja master whose legacy is central to the origin of Splinter. In the original Mirage Comics continuity, Yoshi was a separate human character who died in Japan, while his pet rat mutated to become Splinter; in the IDW comic series, Yoshi dies in Japan and his soul is reincarnated into the rat Splinter, while in the 2012 animated series, Yoshi is killed by the Shredder in Japan and his pet rat mutates after exposure to mutagen in New York—Yoshi does not mutate into Splinter in either of these continuities. Regardless of the timeline, he serves as the moral compass for the Turtles, teaching them ninjutsu after his transformation.

In the IDW comic series, the turtles were already present in the lab before Yoshi's mutation, so he does not discover them afterward. In versions where Yoshi becomes a mutant, he does not subsequently discover four turtles—the timeline of their presence varies by continuity.
