Donatello is the second youngest of the four turtles, raised by their sensei Splinter in the sewers of New York City. His intellect emerged early, and he quickly became fascinated with robotics, computers, and chemistry. He is responsible for creating the Turtle Van, the Turtles' communication devices, and numerous weapons and traps, often salvaging parts from junk and discarded electronics.

Though he prefers peaceful solutions, Donatello is a formidable fighter when necessary. His bo staff allows him to keep enemies at a distance, and his strategic mind makes him an invaluable asset in battle. He struggles with self-doubt at times, feeling that his non-combat role is less heroic, but his brothers constantly remind him that his inventions save their lives.

In many iterations, Donatello is also deeply empathetic, often forming bonds with other mutants and outcasts. His curiosity sometimes leads him into danger, but his loyalty to his family never wavers. He represents the idea that knowledge and creativity are just as powerful as physical strength.

In Their Own Story

In the Image Comics incarnation, Donatello became a cyborg after his body was partially destroyed when he was shot and dropped out of a helicopter (he maintained a positive attitude, though constantly at risk of losing his mind to the cyborg half). He was almost killed by Deathwatch, who drained his brain of mutagen while assailing him with mental torture tactics. Leonardo blamed the CPU of his injured brother's armor for his subsequent brain death; however, Donatello was not dead but separated from his body, and with his brothers' help he returned. In Image Comics Issue #24, Don's armor began to malfunction and was so powerful Donatello was on his last legs until he made a deal with Baxter Stockman, reluctantly. By Issue #25, Donatello was rid of most of his body metal; Baxter informed him his shell had regrown and he was back to being a non-cyborg turtle. Baxter died when Don's metal particles would not help restore his body, and requested Donatello give April O'Neil his regards before dying maniacally. Donatello then battled Lady Shredder and the Foot Clan with his brothers and Pimiko. By the end of the issue, he was completely rid of all metal particles and kept his and Baxter's ordeal a secret. In the official IDW-published conclusion, TMNT Urban Legends, after Dr. X activated an EMP, the living armor abandoned Donatello for a new host, and it was discovered the armor had been impeding Donatello's natural healing abilities. In the Archie Comics, Donatello's appearance was largely based on the 1987 Fred Wolf incarnation, but with Mirage writers on board; he was showcased as pure of heart and soul, able to pass through the Netherworld unscathed, and was chosen by the Sons of Silence to share their wisdom. He was one of the few who could telepathically communicate with them, and was almost a pacifist, detesting every time he used violence. In IDW Publishing, Donatello was seemingly killed at the end of Issue #44 when Bebop and Rocksteady attacked him at the home base; Rocksteady smashed Donatello's shell, nearly killing him. In Issue #45, it was revealed his spirit was in an alternate plane and he was barely clinging to life; his brothers carried his body into the freezer to slow bleeding. Fugitoid needed to go to Burrow Island for equipment. Splinter found Donatello's spirit and guided him back to earth, but due to a helmet keeping his consciousness alive, his mind was in Metalhead while his body was restored. In Issue #46, Donatello-as-Metalhead prepped his body to be moved to the lair, trying to remain brave but finding being trapped in a robot body upsetting. Raphael struggled with seeing Donatello in a robot body but eventually accepted it. In Issue #47, Donatello mentioned to Fugitoid and Harold he was connected to his body's vital signs, indicating he could feel his body and was slowly getting back to normal. In Issue #50, Metalhead self-destructed and Donatello returned to his organic body, now outfitted with an artificial shell. In the 1987 animated series, Donatello was voiced by Barry Gordon (understudied by Greg Berg for 7 episodes) and depicted as the genius who invents many vehicles and equipment including the Turtle Van, the Turtle Blimp, and the Turtle Com. He is the calmer turtle out of the four. His most notable invention was a portable portal capable of opening gateways to other dimensions.
